European Countries Reject Trump’s Hormuz Ultimatum and Call for Diplomatic Resolution

by admin477351

Major European powers have turned down Donald Trump’s ultimatum to send warships to the Strait of Hormuz, opting instead to pursue diplomatic channels to resolve the crisis. Trump had warned NATO members that refusal to help reopen the blocked waterway would have severe consequences for the alliance. The pushback from Europe signaled a deepening transatlantic divide over the management of a conflict that has already sent energy prices surging globally.

Germany’s response was the most direct, with Chancellor Friedrich Merz explicitly ruling out military participation of any kind. He acknowledged that the Iranian regime needed to change but cautioned against military strikes based on lessons learned from past conflicts. His defense minister reinforced that position by publicly questioning what value a handful of European frigates could add to a situation the US Navy was already managing, or failing to manage, on its own.

Keir Starmer of the United Kingdom took a different approach, carefully avoiding a blanket refusal while insisting his country would not be pulled into the broader war. He acknowledged the strategic importance of the strait for global oil supply chains and promised to work toward a viable plan in cooperation with as many partners as possible. Starmer’s position left room for future British involvement but stopped well short of any commitment to military deployment.

Italy’s foreign minister declared that diplomacy must take precedence, while EU ministers as a whole decided not to expand the mandate of their existing Red Sea naval mission. France, Australia, and Japan added their voices to the growing international chorus declining to participate. Greece, which hosts the headquarters of Operation Aspides, also confirmed on Monday it would not take part in any military action in the strait.

The broader regional situation remained volatile, with Israel striking major Iranian cities and claiming significant infrastructure damage. A drone attack in the UAE disrupted oil-loading at the port of Fujairah, while Iran continued to fire missiles toward Israel that were intercepted before reaching their targets. American military losses mounted slowly, while human rights groups estimated that nearly 1,300 civilians had been killed in Iran among a total death toll of over 1,800.
