This summer’s severe heatwaves have led to at least 35,000 excess deaths across Europe, with the final count expected to rise as more comprehensive data from various countries becomes available. Germany, France, and Spain have been particularly impacted, collectively accounting for over 25,000 of these deaths. In Germany, around 14,000 fatalities were attributed to the heat between April and early August, marking the country’s most lethal summer since records began. Spain has reported nearly 5,000 heat-related deaths since May, setting a national record as well.
France has preliminarily recorded approximately 7,300 excess deaths from late May to July, though this number is expected to increase once August figures are compiled. Besides these three countries, the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland have also experienced noticeable rises in mortality rates during the intense heat spells. These heatwaves have driven temperatures beyond 40°C in broad swathes of western and central Europe, shattering numerous temperature records across the region.
Scientists have linked the increasing frequency and severity of such extreme heat events to climate change. The difficulty in pinpointing heat-related deaths stems from the fact that high temperatures often exacerbate pre-existing health issues like cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, rather than being directly noted as the cause of death. This adds complexity to accurately assessing the true impact of the heatwaves on public health.
Experts are predicting that the reported European death toll will rise as more mortality data becomes available, particularly with the inclusion of figures from August. The alarming number of deaths underscores the escalating public health risks associated with increasingly severe heatwaves, emphasizing the urgent need for adaptation and mitigation strategies in response to climate change.
