Spain is bracing for another surge of extreme temperatures, with the national weather agency issuing orange heat alerts across several regions. As the heatwave persists into the weekend, temperatures are anticipated to soar beyond 40C, particularly impacting Madrid and southern parts of the country. Forecasts indicate that areas within Andalusia, such as Córdoba and Sevilla, could experience some of the highest temperatures, reaching up to 42C to 43C.
In Córdoba, the mercury is expected to hit approximately 43C on Thursday, with Friday seeing temperatures hovering around 40C. The province remains under a yellow heat warning as the unusual heat is predicted to extend into the early days of next week. Similarly, Sevilla’s Campiña Sevillana is under an orange alert, with forecasts predicting temperatures will climb to 41C in the afternoon and evening hours.
The intense heat is not isolated to these regions alone. Other areas, including Badajoz, Cáceres, Granada, Jaén, Zaragoza, Lleida, Logroño, and Toledo, are also expected to witness temperatures reaching or exceeding 40C. Across mainland Spain, widespread temperatures are predicted to surpass 34C, while the island of Mallorca could experience highs over 35C. Moreover, warm nights are anticipated in southern Spain, along the Mediterranean coastline, and in the Balearic and Canary Islands, where minimum temperatures may not dip below 25C.
This scorching weather is propelled by a very warm air mass stationed over mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, escalating the risk of wildfires, with some regions facing potentially extreme fire hazards. While there is an expectation of a gradual decrease in temperatures in certain areas after Friday, the heatwave is projected to persist through the weekend. In contrast, northern coastal areas are set to be considerably cooler, with temperatures likely to remain in the mid-20s.
