by admin477351

Bulgaria, Romania, and Türkiye are set to enhance their security operations in the Black Sea as part of the NATO Mine Countermeasures Group. The initiative aims to expand the scope of existing operations to include the protection of critical underwater infrastructure, according to Bulgarian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Kiril Mihailov. This move comes amid heightened regional security concerns and is pending ratification by the Turkish Parliament.

The expanded mission will involve the identification and monitoring of underwater infrastructure deemed vital to national and regional security, such as gas and oil pipelines, internet and fiber-optic cables, and electricity connections across the Black Sea. This marks a significant addition to the current focus on detecting and neutralizing sea mines and drones.

Rear Admiral Mihailov highlighted the ongoing efforts of the Bulgarian Navy to safeguard the country’s maritime areas since the Russia-Ukraine conflict began. Bulgarian forces have successfully neutralized six floating mines and identified over 100 drones or their remnants, with 35 of these assessed as genuine threats and destroyed.

The initiative underscores the collaborative efforts among Black Sea NATO members to enhance maritime security. Bulgarian armed forces are conducting joint operations to maintain surveillance of territorial waters, with assistance from neighboring countries and international partners. A U.S. maritime patrol aircraft has also joined these monitoring activities.

This strengthened coordination aims to enhance the protection of critical infrastructure and improve overall maritime security in the region. The initiative reflects ongoing efforts to address regional security challenges and underscores the importance of collaborative defense strategies among NATO allies in the Black Sea area.
