Amid increasing Russian drone incursions, Moldova and Romania are strengthening defense ties with Ukraine, aiming to enhance their capabilities against aerial threats. The move includes developing domestic drones to better counter these incursions. On August 27, at least five Russian drones breached Moldovan airspace during Moldova’s National Day celebrations, which were attended by Moldovan President Maia Sandu, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and Romanian President Nicusor Dan.
President Sandu criticized the drone intrusions as attempts to intimidate Moldova, emphasizing that Russia’s ongoing conflict in Ukraine is having broader regional impacts. She underscored the necessity of bolstering regional cooperation, citing these airspace violations as a catalyst for investing more in defense infrastructure and collaborating closely with Moldova’s allies.
In recent months, the frequency of Russian drones entering Moldova and Romania’s airspace has risen, escalating security concerns in the region. This uptick in incursions has intensified demands for more robust air defense mechanisms and greater regional defense collaboration.
