Student-Backed Opposition Wins Serbian Election, Challenging Vucic’s Dominance

Serbian leader Aleksandar Vucic has admitted to a significant electoral defeat after the student-backed opposition movement claimed victory in the snap election held on October 25. This result challenges Vucic’s long-standing political dominance in Serbia.

The election featured a tight race between Vucic’s Serbian Progressive Party and the opposition Student List, which emerged from a student protest movement advocating for political change and accountability. The opposition’s campaign gained momentum following widespread public protests and growing dissatisfaction with the government, which were sparked by a deadly incident in Novi Sad in November 2024, where a canopy collapse at a railway station resulted in 16 deaths.

Voter turnout reached nearly 69%, indicating strong public engagement in the electoral process. Vucic, who had recently stepped down from the presidency to potentially position himself for a return as prime minister, alleged foreign assistance in the opposition’s victory without providing evidence. He claimed the Student List received approximately two million votes out of Serbia’s 6.5 million population.

The election outcome signifies a pivotal moment in Serbia’s political landscape, as the student-led opposition garnered substantial support. Representatives of the Student List welcomed the result, emphasizing it as an opportunity for change and urging their supporters to maintain peace.

As Serbia moves forward, the country’s future leadership and the subsequent steps in the political transition remain critical issues to watch. The student movement’s success reflects a significant shift in the political dynamics, with potential implications for Serbia’s governance and reform trajectory.
