Ryanair Warns of 20% Fare Increase for Spain Flights Amid Rising Fuel Costs

by admin477351

Ryanair passengers flying from the UK to Spain may face higher ticket prices next year as the airline considers fare increases and cost-cutting measures due to escalating fuel expenses. The airline’s Chief Executive, Michael O’Leary, has indicated that European air fares could rise by up to 20 percent in 2024, with the company’s fuel bill expected to increase by around €2 billion by March 2028. This surge is partly attributed to higher oil prices associated with ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.

While Ryanair has secured much of its fuel supply in advance, this protection is anticipated to diminish by next spring. In response to the rising costs, the airline is weighing options such as temporary pay freezes, slower recruitment, and adjustments to cabin crew staffing levels. However, European Union aviation safety regulations mandate at least one cabin crew member for every 50 passenger seats, limiting how much Ryanair can reduce its staffing.

In addition to these measures, Ryanair plans to expand its use of artificial intelligence in various operational areas, including flight planning, administrative functions, and customer support, claiming that technology has already enhanced its operational capacity.

Ryanair has also been adjusting its operations in Spain. The airline has reduced its presence at several regional airports, cutting approximately 1.2 million seats for the summer of 2026 and ceasing services to Asturias. However, Ryanair continues to expand at major Spanish destinations such as Málaga, Alicante, and Palma.

Potential labor disputes could add further challenges next summer, as several employee agreements are due for renewal in 2027. Ryanair has cautioned that if disagreements over new contracts arise, they could result in strikes among certain staff groups.

With increasing operational costs, passengers flying to Spain should prepare for potentially more expensive tickets, particularly during the busy summer travel season.
