Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has reached out to Russian President Vladimir Putin, seeking assistance in lifting trade restrictions that Russia has imposed on Armenian exports. In a phone conversation, Pashinyan expressed concerns that these restrictions breach bilateral agreements and the regulations of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), to which both nations belong. He highlighted Armenia’s readiness to resolve the issue through dialogue and requested that Russia take measures to address the matter.
The trade restrictions, which include the temporary ban on several Armenian products such as fruits, vegetables, flowers, fish, and alcoholic beverages, have added tension to the already strained relations between the two countries. These tensions have been exacerbated by Armenia’s growing ties with Western nations. Just last month, Russia enacted these trade limitations, further complicating the bilateral relationship.
The current trade dispute is a reflection of broader geopolitical frictions, particularly regarding Armenia’s foreign policy direction. Russia has previously cautioned Armenia that its pursuit of European Union membership could impact its standing within the EAEU. Despite these disagreements, the economic partnership between the two countries remains significant, with Russia being Armenia’s largest trading partner and a crucial energy supplier.
Amid these developments, Pashinyan reiterated Armenia’s commitment to dialogue as a means to resolve the dispute, underscoring the importance of maintaining cooperative relations within the EAEU framework. The Armenian government hopes that constructive engagement will lead to a resolution that respects existing agreements and supports mutual economic interests.
