In a recent development, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has unveiled plans for the European Union to allocate up to €200 million in grants to Azerbaijan. This financial package is aimed at bolstering transport, energy, and digital infrastructure projects in the region and is anticipated to generate up to €2 billion in public and private investments. The announcement was made during von der Leyen’s visit to Baku, where she met with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to discuss the burgeoning energy cooperation, regional connectivity, and the ongoing Armenia-Azerbaijan peace process.

During their meeting, von der Leyen proposed the initiation of a new EU-Azerbaijan connectivity partnership, which aims to further strengthen ties between the two. President Aliyev noted a significant increase in Azerbaijani gas exports to EU member states, which have surged by around 65% since the 2022 energy agreement with the EU. Currently, 10 EU countries are importing gas from Azerbaijan, highlighting the deepening energy relationship between the EU and Azerbaijan.

In addition to the infrastructure grants, von der Leyen announced a €20 million support program specifically designed for border communities. This initiative will focus on essential areas such as healthcare, mine clearance, rural development, and assistance for small businesses. The support program underscores the EU’s commitment to fostering stability and development in regions affected by conflict and geopolitical tensions.

Von der Leyen’s visit to Azerbaijan marks a significant step in reinforcing the EU’s strategic interests in the South Caucasus region. Following her discussions in Baku, she is slated to continue her diplomatic tour with further talks in Armenia, where similar topics of regional importance are expected to be on the agenda. This visit underscores the EU’s proactive approach in enhancing its partnerships and ensuring energy security amidst the evolving geopolitical landscape.
