Netanyahu Criticizes, Labels UK as ‘Islamic Republic’, Faces Backlash

by admin477351

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has sparked controversy by referring to the United Kingdom as the “Islamic republic of Britain” and suggesting it could become the “first Islamic republic to get a nuclear weapon.” His remarks, made during a podcast interview with Israel’s army radio, have drawn sharp criticism from both British officials and political opponents within Israel. The comments were made in the context of a discussion about the evolving political landscape in Britain and followed Netanyahu’s praise of journalist Randolph Churchill, son of the former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, for his positive reporting on Israel.

The remarks have been widely condemned for perpetuating Islamophobic stereotypes about Britain’s Muslim population. Netanyahu’s comparison also drew parallels with Pakistan, officially known as the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, which has been a nuclear power since the 1990s. The British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office labeled Netanyahu’s comments as “completely unacceptable” and confirmed that the matter has been raised with the Israeli government.

Relations between the UK and Israel have been tense, particularly in light of Israel’s recent military activities in Gaza. The UK government, under Prime Minister Andy Burnham, has been increasingly critical of Israeli policies and has suggested it might escalate pressure on Netanyahu’s government through potential sanctions and trade restrictions concerning illegal settlements.

Netanyahu’s statements have also been criticized domestically. Avi Dabush, an Israeli opposition politician, accused the prime minister of further straining relations with a key international ally at a time when Israel is experiencing growing diplomatic isolation. This comes as tensions between Israel and several Western allies continue to rise over the ongoing conflict in Gaza, alongside intensifying debates over Islamophobia and anti-Muslim rhetoric in Britain.
