Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has announced his resignation, ending his second term prematurely and setting the stage for presidential elections expected by the end of the year. This move comes ahead of Serbia’s snap parliamentary elections scheduled for October 25, and could allow Vucic to pursue the role of prime minister if his Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) garners sufficient support to form the next government.
Until a new president is elected, Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic will serve as interim president, as stipulated by Serbia’s constitution. Vucic, who has been a central figure in Serbian politics for over a decade, first served as prime minister before becoming president in 2017. During his tenure, Serbia has focused on enhancing economic ties with China and maintaining relationships with Russia, while also striving for European Union membership.
The upcoming parliamentary elections pose a challenge to Vucic’s political dominance, with opposition groups like the student-led Students Win movement and the European Serbia coalition set to contest the SNS and its allies. The political landscape in Serbia is further complicated by ongoing protests following the November 2024 collapse of a railway station awning in Novi Sad, resulting in 16 fatalities. These demonstrations have called for greater transparency, accountability, and action against corruption, putting additional pressure on Vucic’s administration.
In response to the protests, several government officials have faced arrest or resignation. Vucic has also announced pardons and amnesties for individuals involved in the protests. Additionally, Serbia has been expanding its defense capabilities by collaborating with Israel, opening a facility to produce Israeli-designed military drones, and strengthening ties with the United States.
